Anicka Yi

Biopolitical / Sensorial / Dividual

Biopolitical: Art that is motivated by the biopolitical - or the crossroads of life and politics - has the potential to subvert its very impetus just the same. What I mean by this is that political relations, particularly those involved in the regulation of bodies whether human or more-than-human, can be wielded for the purposes of calling attention to the inadequacy of oftentimes harmful regulations. More to the point, the biological significance of artistic works such as those that deal with the biopolitical is only made palpable in those moments when the public becomes acutely aware of their participation in its subversion. It is precisely in these moments that the realms of feminist bioscience are able to gain traction as a critical response to patriarchal fears of contamination and the conflagration of pathogens with marginalized groups of people. So, maybe the biopolitical, more than being a divisive tactic, can act as a much-needed bridge between our aesthetic sensibilities and biological reasoning in order to foster better political relations.

Sensorial: The appeal to the sensorial, or that which is related to the senses, is perhaps one of the most consequential aspects of art. However, entire modes of sensing the material world are missing - rejected even. In thinking about this imbalance, what would it mean to reintroduce all of these modes through a truly sensorial reimagining of what art can be? The world as perceived by an organism’s senses, might hold unexamined insights regarding the most pressing issues of our time. The current mass extinction event. The climate emergency. Not all species perceive the world in the same way, or with the same faculties (I’m thinking of bat sonar, for example). Perhaps now is the pivotal moment to tap into a more expansive, sensorial understanding of these multilayered tapestries of information.

Dividual: The dividual, a concept that views persons not as simply individuals but rather as always being in relation to others and the external world, holds a wellspring of possibility for artmaking in the current era. The individual is for all intents and purposes no longer considered the basic “unit” of biology, but rather exists in consortium with all other species as well as biotic and abiotic elements on earth. In my own work, microscopic ecosystems have been a source of inspiration and a starting point in finding a way to counter human exceptionalism amidst the urgency of present conditions. This is all to say that our status as individuals is no longer tenable in recognition of our porosity and aggregate condition. As our dividual selves continue to entangle, perhaps our disciplines and modes of knowledge production across artistic, philosophical, and scientific inquiry will as well.

Caroline Bourgeois

Mutations / Risques / Multi Culture·Freedom

Mutations: Many artists respond to climatic, economic and societal threats with works that speak of our possible mutations, of the force of nature, which in a way, against all odds, transports us into a temporality that is different from our human temporalities. This comes across in Danh Vo’s work, which is shown in the Rotunda (located in Bourse de Commerce) for the new exhibition entitled Avant l’orage. The artist takes us into a kind of forest where dead trees give life to other elements. It also comes across in Anika Yi’s room, which speaks of the creation of works where all human traces have disappeared.

Risques: Great artists show us the doubts that constantly grip them and the risks they constantly take in their work, both through their questions and choice of themes. Such is Marlene Dumas, whose work we have been following closely for many years, whose work we presented in a major solo exhibition in 2022, at Punta della Doganain Venice. Marlene Dumas addresses the strength of sexuality, minorities, a relationship with our stories including political emergencies but never treated in a literal or documentary way: we are just placed in front of our deep contradictions.

Multi Culture·Freedom: The necessity of the cultural offer in a city, a country, a region, is for me to allow the opening of the minds to different cultures, practices that allow to open up, to apprehend a knowledge differently, to understand the differences, to open up to other perceptions, and the artists invite us to feel that and I will quote in particular David Hammons that we presented for the opening of the Bourse de Commerce, who is an important artist who allowed many other black artists in particular to feel authorized to exist. His work comes from his culture, with the body prints for example, of objects from his neighborhood of Harlem and he managed to erect in beauty what was previously perceived as nothing or even garbage, so much that this black culture was not integrated.

David Salle

Partisan / Orthodoxy / Intentionality

Partisan:  Self-explanatory. This is nothing new - the rise of the avant-garde in the 19th century ushered in a newly politicized aesthetic: ‘If what these people  are doing is right, then everything these other people are doing is wrong.’ Then as now, we expect art to represent us. In the heated competition for attention, aesthetic fashion became tied to a social outlook. Perhaps this is inevitable.

Orthodoxy: Another word for orthodoxy in this context is “academic,” which implies that there are certain established, culturally ratified criteria that art must satisfy to be granted admittance to the new salon.

Intentionality: The over-emphasis on the artist’s intention (‘This is a work about….’) has been ramping up for decades; it is now aligned with various forms of ‘virtue-signaling’ to create for certain works a critique-proof aura. See above.

Hans Ulrich Obrist

작가는 아스펜미술관 옥상에 <Every Earthly Morning the Sky’s Light touches Ur Life is Unprecedented in its Beauty>(2021-2022)라는 제목의 작품을 설치해 18개월간 선보였는데, 전시 기간 동안 계절의 변화에 맞춰 작품에도 변화를 주었다.

Video Games / Cosmos / Artist Gardens

Video Games:  Artists are increasingly developing the technical ability to invent, design, and distribute their own games on all continents to create virtual worlds of diversity and inclusion. Artists contribute strongly to a growing plurality of voices and different perspectives by producing and distributing their own games. The creation of games offers a unique opportunity for worldbuilding: rules can be set up, surroundings, systems, and dynamics can be built and altered, new realms can emerge. As artist Ian Cheng often told me, at the heart of his art is a desire to understand what a world is. Now more than ever, the dream is to be able to possess the agency to create new worlds, not just inherit and live within existing ones.

Cosmos: Koo Jeong A’s Seven Stars, a series of work comprised of paintings layered with sprayed-on phosphorescent pigments, viewers encounter the natural phenomena of stars perceived only in a contrasting darkness. As the pigments capture the light, they continue to glow once seen in the dark and reveal stars unperceivable to the eye before. Like such, the artist created a universe that only unveils itself through changing light and hence, time, whereby Koo Jeong A confronts the viewer with the ephemeral experience created through and by light. With this work, she further examines her ongoing interest in the connection between our earthly experience and its relation to the planetary constellations.

Artist Gardens: Artist and poet Precious Okoyomonconsiders tempo-ralities, rather than producing exhibitions. These temporalities include ideas that relate to gardens and nature. Their large-scale installationsare comprised of a growing and living organism. They created an installation on the roof of Aspen Art Museum, Every Earthly Morning the Sky’s Light touches Ur Life is Unprecedented in its Beauty (2021-2022), which was presented for 18 months and followingly changed with the seasons. Together with scientists and biodiversity experts, the artist also developed a methodology for recording and monitoring pollinator activity around the garden.

Kim Jiha

Art in the Age of Tech-based Creativity

The rapid development of artificial intelligence led by the wave of generative AI taught us that creative activities of humans cannot be defined at the traditional level. Human creativity will continue to be honored, but new activities supported by AI are emerging as creative cooperative works of humans and machines. Then, topics such as the process beyond reproduction and expression where prompts are visualized, ensemble of machines and humans, and shift in thinking due to these changes will raise critical questions in art.

The problem is that most creative practices that use digital technology are failing to advance toward establishing machine-human alliance and making transitions in the way we think. They remain at the “reproduction stage,” and media art merely shows the use of fancy techniques that incorporate machines. Even if we draw comparisons with art in the electronic age of the 1960s and 1970s, there is still a big gap between artistic interpretation and artists’ thinking from then and now. Artists then strived to become artist-philosophers by using technology as an art material.

Of course, technology is significant in itself, but it is nearly impossible to find answers regarding the essence of art in today’s environment where technology overpowers art. However, artists should not be the only ones to blame for this imbalance. Rather, policies or people who prompt it should be criticized. What kind of aesthetic value change must art lead in the “age of tech-base creativity?” Regrettably, it may be AI that has the answer to this question.

Kim Min

Desire / Solastalgia / Indra’s Net

Desire: It’s been more than 100 years since Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams was published, but we, especially Korean society, still find “desire” awkward. Desire has long been considered as what must be controlled and ugly when exposed. Yet, with the world connected via social media, an explosion of displays of different desires is expected in Korea. There are instant outbursts of desire in the form of mukbang, selfies and reels, but there will also be people who reveal their deep inner voices more loudly. This will eventually launch “the era of art,” because art has always been about desire, from Egyptian pyramid murals to the works of Anselm Kiefer. The essence lies in the desire to live one’s life to the fullest - the desire born amidst coordinations with others’ and one that resonates with the rest of the world.

Solastalgia: Solastalgia is the state of feeling homesick at one’s own, familiar home.
Glenn Albrecht coined this term to describe the emotional or existential distress of locals in Hunter Valley, Australia where large-scale coal mining changed the environment drastically. A compound of the Latin word solacium (comfort) and the Greek suffix -algia (pain), this word refers to the sense of lethargy and the state of being lost caused by environmental changes. In a world where the recent pandemic and technological advances are constantly changing everything, solastalgia is a condition common to us all today, from the elderly who were born in agricultural societies and are now baffled by kiosks in the city to the young generation, confused about their roots in the explosion of information and different cultures. Insecurity is only exacerbating with rapid climate change having become a reality. Where must we find the roots of our lives, when they seem to float unpredictably?

Indra’s Net: How can different things coexist? In the past, the logic of right and wrong created hierarchies. Today, links that arise from connections create value. We live in the world of “Indra’s Net,” an infinitely vast net that hangs over the sky of Indra’s palace. The “glass marbles” - or connections and resonances - on the net reflect the neighboring marbles. The more marbles, the better the artwork. Art history defined by the web of these connections and their values is urgently needed than that defined by temporary standards such as money, career, and titles. Art museums that operate based on diverse values and beliefs should be cherished more than those led by the market, price tags, the number of visitors and “likes.” That is one of the few paths the currently bewildered Korean art world can take.

Kim Nahyung

Mutual Growth

Last year, the attention on Frieze Seoul was more focused on the potential of Seoul as an art hub rather than Korean artists and galleries. However, things are now taking a turn. ThisWeekendRoom, a small yet faithful incubator of Korean artists, too, has begun to see growing interest from those overseas. Such interest is welcomed, yet still a bit foreign.

While art markets in Asia are fiercely competing against each other, young galleries are busy finding artists, diversifying their collections, and developing content to secure global competitiveness. Detailed planning and the use of the newest technology are a given. It is challenging to continuously invest in artist promotion when the galleries lack recognition and capital. Fortunately, they are blessed with more partners willing to lend a hand today. Public institutions help with overseas PR while the media introduces various players in the scene. Online platforms and collectors volunteer to facilitate international exchange.

How must we prepare to overcome the language and geographical barriers when there is such window of opportunity for the global stage? This is a task for all who have been awaiting change in the Korean art scene. Of course, artists and their works will be at the center of it all. As we all busy ourselves for a breakthrough in growth, we must hope to see more ambitious and driven young artists, because those who work relentlessly toward the land of awe and the unknown while bring hope to their supporters are the engines of mutual growth.

Kim Namsee

Perspectivism / Multinaturalism

Perspectivism is a theory raised by anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro to have anthropology break away from its deep-rooted anthropocentric thinking. According to him, “cosmos is a place where various types of subjective agents or actants (gods, animals, the dead, plants, meteorological phenomena, etc.), including all human and nonhuman, reside,” and they all consider themselves persons and have perspectives of understanding others through that understanding. Humans consider themselves human while seeing jaguars, peccaries, and condors as being nonhuman, and the same is true vice versa.

Here, “human,” or “personnitude” to be exact, is not a distinctive trait unique to a species, but a perspective common to humans and animals alike, where the human/nonhuman distinction is established based on the intensity of the mutual relationship between them. To jaguars, humans may be prey, while another jaguar could be a (dead) ancestor (in the appearance of an animal) of humans, and humans who consume spoiled meat may be in the course of becoming condors that consume them regularly.

Shamans go back and forth between these perspectives and facilitate communication. If relativism puts the homogenous nature and souls and spirits that perceive or reproduce them at odds, then relativism is not perspectivism. Perspective is born of the body, not soul or spirit. The differences in bodies result from sentiments and abilities unique to each, not from physical or physiological differences. If postulating “self-identifiable X,” perceived as beer by jaguars and blood by humans, is relativism, then perspectivist multinaturalism accepts blood/beer type ontologies of relational beings that come in contact with these bodies. In other words, perspectivist multinaturalism does not concern a single nature that rejects plural form, and nature itself is a group of diverse variations.

Lee Daehyung

Water: The Magical Liquid Creating Spiritual and Ecological Solidarity

The essential keywords for the art world should align with the deficiencies of our society, reflecting the deep interconnection between the two realms. Since the pandemic, there has been a profound reevaluation of art’s social value. Humanity now walks a precarious tightrope as it grapples with power struggles and competitive supply chains, causing the compass of wisdom built up over the past century to malfunction.

The revolutionary changes brought about by ChatGPT are not expected to bring abundance beyond borders, and the art world is witnessing a shift towards a different organism that generates a sense of loss and alienation, forfeiting the unique aura that connects people, all while being defined by the avarice numbers of auctions and art fairs.

We must not be blinded by the captivating and capital-driven spotlight, as it is vital to look towards what our society truly needs. The intrinsic power of art is to act as a beacon of light that illuminates the unknown for the majority. In the last three years, humanity has been helpless against the tragedies of excessive, insufficient, and contaminated water. Water, which comprises 60% of the human body and covers 70% of the Earth’s surface, is vital for human survival and the planet’s sustenance. In order for instrumental art to maintain its original power, future art must explore where humanity should look to and what kind of value can be created.

The importance of water is indisputable, as the absence of water would bring about humanity’s demise. A source of inspiration for countless poets, novelists, artists, and architects throughout history, water could also serve as a spiritual and ecological cure to the disrupted global solidarity and transcend the walls erected by hatred. Perhaps the modest, yet mighty drop of water that can save a person’s life can also restore the value of art that should never have been neglected.

Lee Nayun

Migration and Survival / Reciprocity (in positive terms)

Migration and Survival:  Sonia Shah stresses that migration is a natural, survival instinct, that it is neither an inconvenience nor crisis, but a seed for change and possibly the only alternative in the age of crisis. How might this apply to us who recently experienced a pandemic? The burning Earth seems to face its demise and we feel threatened by viruses everywhere. Environmental conditions are only exacerbating, competition is growing more fierce, and the gap between the rich and poor is widening.

We are now living the Anthropocene, where humanity can have a geological influence on our planet and be blamed for our own fall. Is it not artistic activities that differentiate human activities from those of animals and plants? We, as humans, commit evil to our planet, the living organisms that inhabit it and those in our own ethnic groups; yet, if we had to categorize our deeds into good and bad, art probably falls with the first. How will the wise Homo sapiens, or what I wish to call “art-making mankind” here, survive this crisis-filled era with art?

Reciprocity (in positive terms): Defined as “the practice of mutually exchanging special benefits,” reciprocity may allow for alternative transaction or business applicable to all areas that claim to practice ESG business operations, including art museums. The most important characteristic of reciprocity is the “mutual exchange” of presents (benefit). Reciprocity is valid only when what is exchanged has a special value for which monetary value cannot be set. A great example that reflects the spirit of reciprocity is artists’ works.

Artists, who create art from nothing with their intellectual and spiritual abilities and techniques acquired by training, gift the humanity with cultural presents. Though artworks sometimes become capital in the contemporary society, the meanings they entail are entirely different from any other product. What is valuable or sacred cannot be sold, but they can be gifted. To mankind, there doesn’t seem to be a deed that is more reciprocal than art, only second to nature-provided food resources. From a reciprocal perspective, all forms of prosperity are mutual and not a zero-sum game. Art must belong to all.

Lee Yeonsook

Skin / Fetishism / Subculture

Skin: Skin serves as a delicate boundary between the self and the world that both exposes the self to the world and also separates the two. This often makes us see it merely as a “shell” enveloping our fundamental identities. However, cyber feminists in the West from the 1990s like Sandy Stone appropriated skin as a “tool” or “weapon” of cyber agents that can be worn or removed anytime, and also reproduced infinitely. On the contrary, the human skin, which reveals the limitations of the finite body, is left within the boundary of reality. In today’s world, where we find ourselves at the border of cyberspace and reality, how are we accepting the gap between the finitude and infinitude of the skin?

Fetishism: Often translated as “materialism,” fetishism has been an important concept in psychoanalysis and Marxist philosophy. In both, fetishism has been received productively and critically in the lineage of surrealism in that it denies or rejects “real” reality. Captivating fetishistic objects that display the desire for part-objects make us catch the covert power of sexuality that substitutes “unreal” realities with “real” realities.

Subculture: Subculture refers to a minor style of life that “falls short of” becoming popular culture or high culture. Closer to “appropriations, thefts, subversive transformations, and movement” (Dick Hebdige) than to art, subculture has been used in contemporary art for a long time. Recently, it has been penetrating art museums more actively with young generation artists leading the trend. Ranging from “deviant” sexual practice of queers to techno club rave cultures, superficial self-expression of YouTubers, idol fandoms and BL/GL producer-consumer culture, subculture quickly adapts to the contemporary media landscape and produces a unique aesthetic style that transcends the traditional boundaries of aesthetic forms.

Cyborg

Cyborg: In her sculptures and installations, Mire Lee imagines a new humanity in which the carnal, the mechanical, and the digital collide. Her work invents new organisms that completely reconfigure relationships between technologies and humans. Composed of materials including low-tech motors, pumping systems, steel rods, and PVC hoses filled with grease, glycerin, silicone, slip, and oil, Lee’s animatronic sculptures operate both like living organisms and biological machines.

Drawing references from architecture, horror, pornography, and cybernetics, and evoking bodily functions and environmental decay, Lee offers a visceral means to describe properties that exist between the realms of the technological and the corporeal: tenderness, desire, abjection, anxiety, and revulsion, among other states. She is taking us into the future.

Mika Rottenberg

Materiality / Plastic

Materiality: What kind of ‘energy’ objects we interact with ‘hold’? from ‘dead labor’ as defined by Marx as the sum of life/time/human energy invested and encapsulated in an object to newer ideas about matter itself as an entity and of how we are in fact consumed by the objects we produce, like microplastics becoming part of our bodies. This way of thinking about matter as an active partner rather than ‘resource’ we extract and ‘fix’ into shapes is super intriguing, especially in light of new materials developed in the field of biofabrication and the amazing options this generates for the future.

I’ve been exploring systems of commerce, labor, and ‘waste’ through my work for over two decades as a way of looking at the absurdity of our rampant production, distribution, and consumption of objects and energies. In my current body of work, my ambition is to create spaces and sculptures that both ‘nurture’ the viewer and the environment. Objects that ‘perform’ not only on the external surface, but also on a cellular level, and perhaps modestly help shift our current absurd mode of production.

Plastic: My work explores the vibrant toxic landscape humans currently inhabit. If one might think about humanity as a whole - as one big monstrous body - its excretion might be plastic. I’m currently producing small sculptures and whimsical public fountains from this reclaimed plastic excretion. Plastic should be seen as an anthropocenic natural resource that can be reused continually and shaped almost endlessly - breathing new life into an otherwise destructive form of ‘waste’ that is extraordinarily versatile in what it can do, yielding various color, shapes, and texture possibilities.

I’m no longer satisfied with the role of art/artist as a reflecting force. Can artists help change our mode of production? Can artists tell new stories about materials and production - stories that aren’t just cynical, but actually strive for the deep change we need in order to, at least, attempt to keep our ecosystem somewhat operational? This is a great time for experimentation with alternative modes of production. I’m very intrigued by the possibilities, and I keep confronting my own fascination with the shiny, seductive toxic ‘surface.’

Moon Hyejin

Massification / Pattern Governmentality / Metamodern

The unprecedented outpour of images fueled by the combination of smartphones and high-speed internet is fundamentally changing how we define, value, produce, and understand contemporary art. Post-Internet art sought to break away from the notions of place and material property, which were, in part, avant-garde pursuits tied to media activism. In contrast, the recent massification of images embodies the principles of quantity-based, efficiency-oriented data capitalism. Social media, which depends on mass data patterns and thus follows the principle of quantity, has a tremendous influence on the qualitative value of artworks and exhibitions today.

This demonstrates that art, which is based on the qualitative, is also unfree from pattern governmentality. The outburst of images transforms the process of image production, distribution, and reception, the process of institutional approval, and how we perceive, and organize images. It is “structures of feelings” (Raymond Williams), where various principles and phenomena such as presentism, mixed reality, senses of overlaps and dispersion, and the distortion of history are witnessed in the same period. Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker called this “metamodern” and wished to distinguish the contemporary from the postmodern era.

Historical naming for this age requires further discussion, but it is clear that contemporary art has its unique qualities of sense radio and that at its foundation is a shift of labor and sign towards post-Fordist production. Massification, scalability, mass images, and capitalism all signify that contemporaneity is tied to modernity. Given that images are closely connected to the principles that operate the age, we must take a closer look at the complexity of relationships between contemporary art, contemporary visual culture, and the production systems of today.

Yana Peel

Gaze / Next / Becoming

Gaze: Asking what the world looks like when viewed from a different perspective than the traditional eye drives a new research project at the National Portrait Gallery in London, “Women at Work,” which places women at the centre of history. The initiative is part of a partnership forged between the museum and the Chanel Culture Fund in 2020, readdressing historic gender imbalances and doubling the number of women displayed in the 20th- and 21st-century galleries.

What happens if the gaze is female? How do we re-see history? How does this help us imagine new futures? Spurred on by the trailblazing legacy of Gabrielle Chanel, CHANEL remains committed to continually reinventing the gaze for contemporary eyes.

Next: The composer, performer, music director Jung Jaeil has created a new genre of sound, fusing traditional Korean music with Western instruments. His belief that music has no boundaries, is changing how and what we hear?from his soundtracks for Parasite (2019), to his musical direction on Squid Game (2021).
Jung shows us new creative possibilities. Embracing the new and the next has been at the core of Chanel’s mission since its founder Gabrielle Chanel championed the avant-garde in the early 20th-century.

Now, we continue to support the artists and creatives around the world who are pointing us to what comes next-from presenting “Now & Next” at Frieze Seoul to partnering with BIFF (Busan International Film Festival) Partnership, Creating conditions for artists to thrive is a tradition that goes back a century at Chanel, but also foregrounds the future of culture as we envision it.

Becoming: Gabrielle Chanel did more than design clothes. She gave women the freedom to become something different-to move through the world with independence by wearing clothes that liberated them with style from constraints.

Becoming is a an act of freedom, making it possible for each of us to carve our own paths Committed to advancing conditions so that women and girls around the world can create their own destinies.
In parallel, the Chanel Culture Fund has a mission to encourage artists can thrive with dignity, prosperity and broad knowledge exchange. This state of becoming is as fundamental to the House of Chanel as it is to creatives around the world, whose lives and work are devoted to the process of becoming something different by creating something new.
