PA

Q: Contemporary art seems to have survived, repeated and regenerated itself in the past 40 years. The results produced through repetition and reproduction are sometimes as fresh as seeing them for the first time and occasionally reminiscent of something that someone in the past has already shown. Under the premise that art will continue in the future, as one of the leaders of contemporary art, if you were to pick the most important keyword for contemporary art, what would it be and why?

A: Picking one work to sum up the entirety of contemporary art is a challenge but I would say art remains as “undefinable” as the endless creativity of artists. Certainly, it’s that quality which challenges and inspires us to see the world in new ways with each successive generation.

Q: Based on what plan and design did you first open the gallery in 1992, how would you describe how your vision has changed over time?

A: Hauser & Wirth was founded 1992 by my mother-in-law Ursula Hauser, my wife Manuela and myself, as a family business. In 2000, Partner and President Marc Payot joined the gallery and, in 2020, we welcomed our CEO Ewan Venters. We now represent over 90 artists and estates and we have become a global company that have expanded our space on three continents. The art world has changed dramatically and professionalized over time, and we have changed with it. However, despite the evolution, Hauser & Wirth's central ambition and vision has not really changed: the artist. We have been ? and will always be ? an ‘artist-minded gallery’. The artist is, so to speak, the 'north star' of the gallery and their needs guide our decisions, artistically and entrepreneurially.

Q: Hauser & Wirth in Menorca opened in July 2021. Focusing on education and sustainability, it was designed for both the local community and visitors could properly experience contemporary art through workshops, screenings, and talk shows. Why did you plan to establish an art center in the first place?

A: Hauser & Wirth Menorca came about due to the success of our art centers in Somerset and Los Angeles. Isla del Rey is the most extraordinary setting to show contemporary art in a site steeped in history and surrounded by the sea and wild nature. How could we resist showing our artists there? After a five year-project to conserve and convert the building, we welcomed our first visitors to Hauser & Wirth Menorca last year. Over three decades, we have broadened the definition of what is commonly understood as a ‘gallery’. Our spaces in (Somerset, Los Angeles, Menorca), Piet Oudolf Garden (Somerset), and sculpture park (Chillida Leku) are an extension of the term ‘gallery’ for me. These ‘art centers’ do not replace the traditional role of the gallery but in a certain context they are important catalysts and become ‘energy centers’. Hence sustainability in the broader sense, and art education are areas that once again enable us to combine our personal passions with entrepreneurship. The visitors, the artists and the collectors all respond to this combination, and extension of, the art experience with enthusiasm.

Q: Everyone is very excited about the first Frieze Seoul. As prominent leaders and representatives say, is Korea really an important place for contemporary art? If you agree, please tell us why you think it is important and what you consider to be the potential of Korean contemporary art.

A: The South Korean art scene is extremely vibrant and sophisticated. I first visited South Korea two decades ago through a connection to the legendary artist Nam June Paik.
The contemporary art scene In Korea has grown to include a sophisticated domestic infrastructure built on a long history of arts patronage. In terms of modern and contemporary art, since the 1980s, several local galleries, such as Hyundai, and Kukje have been promoting international avant-garde art to Korea. The Gwangju Biennale, established in 1995, is Asia's oldest biennial of contemporary art, and Kiaf, which started in 2002, is one of the first art fairs with an international scope to open in Asia. Korea boasts formidable corporate collections, many showcased in museums such as Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art and the Amore Pacific Museum of Art. In 2013 / 2014, notable publications and exhibitions on Dansaekhwa put modern Korean art in the global spotlight. These are all key building blocks for a truly international and vibrant art scene.

Q: I'm curious about the artists and works that Hauser & Wirth will present at the first Frieze Seoul. At this fair, what kind of based vision do you have? And what do you want to test based on this vision?

A: For the inaugural edition of Frieze Seoul, and in celebration of our 30th anniversary, the presentation will bring together an astounding group of contemporary and historical works by leading gallery artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Mark Bradford, John Chamberlain, George Condo, Gu?nther F?rg, Philip Guston, Camille Henrot, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Luchita Hurtado, Rashid Johnson, Mike Kelley, Glenn Ligon, Angel Otero, Nicolas Party, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Mika Rottenberg and Avery Singer. Our vision as gallery is to be an incubator for art, talent and ideas. Our Frieze Seoul presentation shows how we have facilitated creative visions of our artists over 30 years. We also play a major part in helping others to build and shape their collections, and we have worked in-depth with some collectors over decades drawing on our unique expertise and connoisseurship of artists and estates. We hope to deepen the connection with the collectors in Korea and help them build collections that fit their respective vision and ambition.

Q: In order for Korean contemporary art to become more mature, what do you think we need to develop and how? I'd like to hear your opinions on your experiences of looking around the world.

A: With the existing solid foundations and sophisticated infrastructure, I think the younger generation is key for the continued development of the art scene. Education and learning have been an essential component of what we offer since the early days and we want everyone regardless of age to feel comfortable around art and to encourage a discourse that keeps the art world moving and forward-looking. We see the art world as an interconnected eco-system and learning is the network that can forge links of understanding.

Q: In the very first question, it was said that modern art has the same appearance in a large frame and continues to repeat and reproduce, but in fact, it is true that the credibility of that statement is declining now while digital art is developing dramatically. What kind of flow do you think digital art such as NFT will develop?

A: The digital experience of art will continue to exist. We can show the artist's work to millions of digital ‘visitors’ to our own channels and reach global audiences. I have always believed in breaking down barriers so for digital art, I keep an open mind. The NFT first wave as we have just experienced it, was dominated largely by speculation and speculators. The collapse of crypto-currencies and the NFT market might be a watershed moment, and it will be interesting to see how it develops further. As with any new form there is a fair amount of hype and we have our own specialist advisors at the gallery to guide our collectors and artists. In my personal view, nothing can replace the physical experience of looking at a fantastic painting or sculpture.PA

A: 맞다.

Rachel Lehmann

Q: Lehmann Maupin is one of the earliest to expand to the Korean art market among other Seoul outposts of the well-known Western galleries. The gallery moved to a new space in Itaewon, an expansion from the previous space in Samcheong-dong. How would you describe the gallery’s performance since its opening in Seoul?

A: Our expansion and move within Seoul was the natural progression of the ambitious programming we have organized since first opening in Seoul in 2017. As the city has grown in prominence both regionally and abroad, we believed it was critical to expand our exhibition space, allowing our artists to push the limits of their medium and our team to diversify the variety and scale of the exhibitions we mount. This new location enabling visitors to engage with multiple aspects of an artist’s practice in a way they weren’t able to previously in our prior location. With this move, we wish to demonstrate our confidence and commitment to the Korean market and the country's rich arts community. We are on the brink of witnessing an infusion of cultural investment and international interest. The timing is optimal for an expansion of this kind.

Q: Four years have passed since 2017 when Lehmann Maupin entered the Korean art market. How do you feel about the art market and the collectors in Korea? Are there any differences compared to the expectations you had before launching the gallery in Seoul?

A: For us, the bond between a gallerist and a collector is extremely important. Gaining someone’s trust takes time, but once the trust is built, there is traction and interest in the program. Most of our collectors come back after their initial acquisition. In general, Korean collectors enjoy learning about new artists and the trends in the international art market. They read gallery newsletters and closely watch the auction markets. They prefer to learn about an artist first before pulling the trigger.

Q: Artists represented at Lehmann Maupin seem to have various identities across different age, nationality, and gender. The gallery is showing continuous effort in discovering and introducing new artists. How do you see the course of contemporary art hereafter as you meet new artists?

A: A core strand of the gallery’s DNA is presenting artists in new geographies, with the aim of diversifying local art markets. Today, we are recognized for working with some of the most talented women artists in the world, such as Teresita Fern?ndez and Shirazeh Houshiary, many of whom have been with the gallery since our earliest days. We are also known for championing late-career artists and estates, especially those who were underrepresented throughout their careers, such as Heidi Bucher, Helen Pashgian, McArthur Binion, and Cecilia Vicuña. Looking ahead, we will continue engaging with new voices and giving a platform to the new generation of artists. Since 2020, we’ve started working with some of the most exciting artists in the world, including Arcmanoro Niles, Calida Rawles, Dominic Chambers, and Tammy Nguyen.

Q: Lehmann Maupin represents several Korean artists such as Do Ho Suh, Suh Se Ok, and Lee Bul among others. Are you paying attention to any other Korean artists? If you would prefer not to mention any names, could you please explain what kind of characteristics you take notice of in an artist?

A: Correct, we have a longstanding relationship with three key Korean artists - Lee Bul, Suh Se Ok and Do Ho Suh - who we have the privilege of working closely with in some cases for almost 20 years in presenting their work both regionally and internationally. Looking ahead, Lehmann Maupin is interested in expanding its roster by representing more Korean contemporary artists and offering exposure globally. Although we can’t confirm any names at this time, it’s certainly in our plans.

Q: Which artists are going to be exhibited during Frieze Seoul? Could you please give us a brief introduction about the selected works and the reason for the selection?

A: We will debut a large-scale painting by McArthur Binion, whose work will be on view in the gallery’s newly-renovated space in the Hannam-dong neighborhood in the fall 2022. We are also presenting a brand new painting by American artist Tammy Nguyen, who recently joined the gallery; a historical mixed media sculpture by the late Swiss artist Heidi Bucher; and a selection of new works by Korean artists Lee Bul and Do Ho Suh.

Q: What do you think is needed in order for Korean contemporary art to develop further? I’d like to ask you, who have experienced the art scene all around the world, for your insight.

A: Working in the gallery sector for a long time, I have realized that developing and pushing forward a dialogue about contemporary art is a team effort. Active exchanges with the museum as well as curators, critics, and academics are integral to the process. We have already experienced such cases as in the Korean Tansaekhwa(also known as Dansaekhwa), where writings and international exhibitions on Korean art became the focal points of new concepts and conversations. These conversations in turn become the force that expands the diversity of the market.PA

A: 맞다.

PA

Q: Compared to 1993 when the gallery first started, what has changed and hasn’t in David Zwirner?

A:  A key mission of the gallery that has not changed and will not ever change is our dedication to our artist, estates, and foundations which we present. We consider ourselves an “artist first gallery”. In terms of what has changed, there is a lot to discuss but over the last 29 years we have expanded globally so we now have locations in New York, London, Paris and Hong Kong, and will open a location in Los Angeles in 2023. We have also expanded our editorial and content divisions, and this includes the establishment of David Zwirner Books (our publishing arm), Dialogues (our podcast) and Utopia Editions (our fine art prints division).

Q: Your artists are so diverse that they cannot be described in a single word. Such as Neo Rauch, Yayoi Kusama, Kerry James Marshall, Oscar Murillo, Wolfgang Tillmans, Francis Alÿs, and Alice Neel, they have a wide range of themes, and expressions. What are the criteria for choosing an artist?

A: The leadership of the gallery are always looking and visiting exhibitions around the world, and taking note of new, mid-career, and established artists and what they are thinking and creating. The decision to add an artist to our rooster is a thoughtful process, and one which the gallery takes very seriously.

Q: You are well known for maintaining good relationships with artists. Would you let us know the secret?

A: Our goal is to establish long term relationships with each artist who joins the gallery. We have many artists who have been with us and David Zwirner since the beginning, including Luc Tuymans, Stan Douglas, Diana Thater, among others.

Q: Also, you’re in good with other galleries. For example, you have a partnership with Hauser & Wirth, and established Zwirner & Wirth. What is the most important thing in a cooperative relationship like this?

A: Yes, we did have a partnership and gallery space with Hauser & Wirth. Zwirner & Wirth gallery operated in New York on the Upper East Side from 2000 to 2009. The art world is an ecosystem and collaboration and collegiality is key.

Q: Following David Zwirner Books and Utopia Editions, you also opened an online distribution channel called Platform last year. Looking at your passionate expansion of new businesses makes us expect the future of the gallery business to be different from before, what kind of future are you looking at?

A: Platform emerged during the beginning of the pandemic, and was hosted on davidzwirner.com. We wanted to offer other galleries in various cities, who may not have had built out online viewing rooms on their websites, a chance to show and sell the work of their artists on davidzwirner.com at a time when most physical galleries were forced to close due to COVID-19. The series had four iterations focusing on galleries in different cities: Platform New York, Platform London, Platform Brussels and Paris, and Platform Los Angeles. Once the series had ended, we had so many galleries coming to us asking if they could participate that we realized that this really could be a separate business and entity, so in May 2021 Platform was established as a standalone ecommerce website: platformart.com Platform just celebrated its one year anniversary and is continuing to grow, so we definitely see it is a company which will continue to expand and reach an even wider audience of current and future art collectors.

Q: David Zwirner is a gallery to which Korea’s representative artist Yun Hyongkeun belongs and is familiar to us. Is there a Korean artist that you’re paying attention to?

A: One name may not represent our consistent interest and long-term research, since Our Team has been following Korean artists working today, of various generations. We are impressed by the diversity of their practices, media and styles. With the global travel resumed, we are hoping to get further close watch through local fairs like Frieze and shows and biennales in Korea.

Q: David Zwirner has been steadily interested in the Korean art market by opening the Hong Kong branch and participating in Kiaf. Could you let us know what you think of the Korean art market based on your Korean customer’s tendency?

A: Korean clients are very curious and fast learning. They are active on digital sphere, which helps to boost the communication. Korean art market presents a broad spectrum of interests. We are very pleased to see a huge amount of love for artists of Minimalism and Conceptualism while young artists from everywhere across the globe enjoy enormous following.PA
